How do you manage your baby’s eczema?
We just took my baby to the doctor, and he has eczema. The doctor gave him cortisone for his face, a different stronger steroid cream for his body, and told me to wash him with warm water, no soap except on his bottom, and load him down with eucerin cream. hopefully this will work. I was just curious to see what other mommies do for their little ones who have eczema. Any tricks that you have found helpful in addition to what my doc recommended? Thanks to everyone!!

I think your best bet is to use Eucerin religiously, especially in the winter. When you notice a flare coming on , start the steroid creams right away. Us your Eucerin creams and steroid creams right after baths to help lock in the moisture from the bath. If the creams don’t seem to help, as your baby’s doctor about using an antihistamine in conjunction with the creams.
I hope this helps!
That’s exactly what I was told to do for my daughter. I also found that Aquaphor worked really well, too.
This is just a suggestion, but eczema can be linked to allergies. I requested a referral from our doc to an allergist when she was about a year old. She did have some food allergies that once we cut them out it helped her skin out massively.
How old is your son. Both boys had when they were babies. Well my four year old still get his since he has asthma and allergies. I don’t know how many times you give your son a bath. I would cut back when giving bath since it make it fare up. Soap my son doctor told me to use Dove when he was a baby. Dove sensitive skin or aveeno kind has well. I would keep putting lotion on after giving him a bath.
we cover her with baby ezcema lotion, it has disney character on it forgot the brand. She gets bathed every other day since bathing causes her skin to be dry. We apply the lotion a few times a day and it went away.
Depends on the reason for the eczema – if it is just dry skin, then yes, the moisturizers will work wonders. Use a little every time you change his diaper. And keep the bathing to a minimum… most kids don’t even need bathed more than 1x a week.
My sons gets eczema extremely bad from head to two very easily. To control it I use cetaphil lotion and cleanser. I have found that this works better than the eucerin cream. I cover them in a thick layer morning and night. The cleanser is also very mild so it didn’t irritate the skin. The doctor also recommended that i add a very small amount of bleach to their bath water, this kills the bacteria that is naturally in water, and so the water doesn’t irritate the skin as much. When i use the prescription creams from the doctor I often times will mix it fifty-fifty with vaseline, this helps hold it on the skin and prevent it from getting rubbed off by clothing and such. I do this especially if it is going to be a while before I can reapply. It takes a lot of work, but we have not had a major flare up in almost a year now!! Once it is clear just remember that you have to stay proactive or it will return in a hurry. PS just so you are aware Aquafor is basically the same as petroleum jelly. Good Luck!!
For my nephew( his is caused by allergies and is still very severe and he’s 4 now) we use the Aveeno sensitive skin bath products. They really seem to help him.
My son was born with an unusual rash all over his torso. it looked like he had gravel burn or something.
When he was 4 months old he got a large red circular rash on his left cheek, it didn’t go away. i never washed him in soap; we don’t even have soap in our household, as i have eczema myself and my partner has psoriasis.
in the beginning i used sorbolene cream on my son’s face, (i tried to do things naturally, steering away from topical steroids and such) i didn’t find this much help, i also bathed him in sorbolene cream. it kept him moist but but did nothing for his eczema.
i then heard of paw paw cream. this was fantastic for a few months, but then his eczema spread from his face to his neck, down his arms and onto his legs. i still tried to keep up the natural remedies. the paw paw cream worked really well for a few months, but it had it’s down sides, it smells terrible, and if it comes in contact with clothing, it is really hard to wash out as it is oil based. the paw paw cream stopped working all together after maybe 3 months.
i was advised by a friend to try Alpha – Kerri oil. this is the best invention ever, it is lanolin so people allergic to wool canot use it, but i smells wonderful, a little squirt into his bath water everynight had ALL his eczema gone within a week.
This stayed that way for about a year, until recently, when he has had very small amounts of eczema under his arms and behind his ears, his ears were actually starting to pull away from his head because of it.
We now have no choice but to use cortisone, extremelly strong doses to keep it away. but it does work. i tried to go natural, but in the end medical science porovailed.
hope this helps.
EDIT: i would also like to agree with whom ever it was that said eczema is linked to allergies, my son is allergic to eggs, shellfish, latex, peanuts, bandaid glue, i think that is it so far, that i can remember.
I am not an expert on the subject but 2 of my friends babies have quite severe excema. They were both advised to keep them cool, no blankets, too many clothes etc, body heat only makes it worse. One of them also had her son in wet chux baby wipes and then had short body suits over the top, sounds weird, but it actually helped for him to stay cool. My other friend was just saying yesterday that if he daughters head is warm, then the rest of her is OK as well so she does not need to cover her. Good luck, I know this can be very uncomfortable for him. Hope the cream works.
I have also been advised that in many cases of children who have eczema they also have food allergies, might pay to speak to your doctor about this, not sure if it is true but from speaking to others, it seems to be true.
i DON’T HAVE A BABY NO MORE. SORRY!
take it easy with the hydrocortisone and yeah slap on the moisturizer but watch out for things like bubble bath, shampoo or wash many are packed with irritants.
One site called exederm lets you compare the ingredients of leading baby products like J&J, Gerber and Eucerin – its amazing whats in some of them. http://www.exederm.com
Also the National Eczema Association publish a list of irritants to avoid
good luck
