In my experience, doctors will prescribe steroids as sort of a cure all to treat eczema symptoms when they aren’t sure on how to cure the underlying problem. You should be concerned about steroid use as there are a lot of unwanted side effects like weight gain and high blood pressure.
Focus on treating the underlying cause of your eczema and minimize flare ups by:
- Bathing using warm, not hot, water and a very mild soap.
- Use a petroleum jelly based moisturizer on wet skin after bathing or washing hands.
- Moisturize with the petroleum jelly based moisturizer throughout the day as needed. Don’t use lotions – they dry out the skin.
- Pat, don’t rub, excess water from skin after moisturizing as rubbing will irritate the skin.
- Wear 100% cotton clothing.
- Avoid the use of detergents, fabric softeners, and dryer sheets with perfumes and/or dyes.
I found an excellent article on this website about how a woman with severe eczema finally beat it — http://tinyurl.com/kv6pvs
The main cause of eczema is overreaction of the immune system. Identifying certain foods, chemicals, etc can be very helpful in battling this disease. I try to avoid soy and milk products which trigger my flare-ups.
After using number of prescription drugs I’ve turned to the natural treatments.
Now I use herbal remedies from serenaskin.com, which aim at the root of the disease – the immune system, and are steroid-free.
After about 2 weeks of using ointment and spray my skin has been cleared up and now I just continue with anti-eczema extract, which controls the immune system. My skin has been clear for months now.
It is the only treatment I have found that provides me complete relief when I use it as directed.
