How do I keep my 22 mos. old from scratching eczema on her arms at night?

She’s really good at not scratching at it during the day as we’ve taught her not to, but when she’s asleep she can’t keep herself from scratching.
Furthermore why does she only develop the eczema on her inner elbows and knees and only during the winter?
Last winter I used a baby eczema cream by healthy naturals and it worked ok. This year though I don’t think it’s doing anything.
Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated!
We use Dreft baby laundry detergent to wash her clothes.

They make these little mittens for baby’s.She could wear some of those at night. Also keep her nails cut extremely short- this way even if she does scratch she cant do that much damage. Also for eczema just keep the areas well lotioned (try some Eucerin- its not for babies but it is really gentle and shouldnt hurt.) Oatmeal baths (or Aveeno) at night will really help soothe the itching. Baby oil will help out with eczema as well.
Just was wandering if you are sure what she has is eczema. It could just be a heat rash- since it is mainly in b/w her elbow and knee bends. Diaper rash creams work for this.
Try putting socks on her hands when she goes to sleep at night.
I wish you the best of luck.
I have really bad eczema on my legs, and have the same problem. There are some lotions (I use Aveeno; is that how it’s spelled?) you can use that help. Also, I’ve found the best thing to do is to just keep the nails REALLY short, so they’re ineffective.
And as far as I can tell, having eczema in only certain spots isn’t weird. It’s what I have, as well as some other people I’ve talked to.
First stop the Dreft. It is actually one of the worst you could be using. Second just use LOTS of lotion-you may have to change brands until you find one that works for her this time around. Eczema is worse in the winter because of the difference in climate-dryer weather. It can be worse on the elbows if they are leaned on as this causes further drying. My 18 month old has eczema and so do I. For laundry we use All Free and Clear, but it may be some other brand that works for you.
Keep her fingernails trimmed short and get in the habit of putting lotion on her before bed so she won’t be as itchy. She gets it on knees and elbows, because that’s where she sweats, and the sweat aggrivates the skin.
Try cetaphil lotion, it’s really gentle. Dove for sensitive skin is a good soap.
I would switch to using NO degerent. Warm or hot water will do. Now I have a tip for you that i am kinda excited about. I have exema on my one elbow. Tonight it was SO bad. I use Vitamin E on my c-section mark and on my son’s dry skin on his face (it dones’t hurt if it gets in the eyes like baby oil!). So a few hours ago I poked a vit. E tablet with a pin and I squeezed it on my elbow. It is WAY better already!!!
Try that. But for tongiht I would wrap his arms with a peice of cloth or something to cover the exema… like one of those tensor bandaids from a first aide box
get some childrens gloves and use those at night. Make a big deal of how special they are — don’t say anything about scratching or what ever. That way you can make it seem as it they are truly special, you could buy a pair for your self and tell her that you wear them too.
Try Eucerin Calming Cream.( Walgreens, Kroger) It has worked for several people and may give her relief. Dermarest also makes a medicated skin lotion, and Cortizone Plus in the tube might help her heal. All over over the counter products.
Good luck with your precious little one.
First off, honestly you don’t have to buy such expensive laundry detergent, things like Tide Free and All Free Clear work just as well because they are hypoallergenic and dye and scent free.
Secondly I’m not sure why eczema develops JUST there but winter is VERY dry and aggravating to the skin. My niece has the worst form of eczema, her skin actually tears open and gets oozy. There is special cream you can get from the doctors and beyond that my sister was told to use Aveeno Eczema Care lotion because again, it is natural and hypoallergenic. It’s soothing and works very well. Use that on her at night then cover her arms. If getting too hot is a concern try to find some light long sleeve shirts or under shirts to put on her at night. Also, run a humidifier almost non stop. Hope all goes well for her.
I had to sew the end of her sleeves to keep my 3 yr old from doing that. I use Hylira, a prescription hydro lotion and it helps with the winter chaffing. A dermotologist should help with prescribing. I have a total of 8 diff meds for diff stages of her eczema and it will only get worse.Eczema is usually from a food allergy. Should get tested and find out if anything eaten is making the flare up. I did and my 3 yr skin looks better. She is allergic from milk, soy, corn, wheat, mold, pollen and some things I cant pronounce.
Best thing to do is try to get a medicated lotion with hydrocortizone and menthol(dermatologist can prescribe) this will help best for the itching.
My son gets eczema during the winter too. It is only two small spots, so it never gets questioned, I forget about it come spring when the sun drys it out. I put baking soda in his bath at night, sort of like you can for chicken pox and that seems to help. You can also make a paste of baking soda and water that can sit on the site when they are in the tub, maybe not the knees, but at least the elbows.
those are extra sinsetive areas and I would try Eurcerin cream udderly smooth….it is thick and will help anything! I like triple anti-biotic too…keep the nails trimmed short and put sleeves on….don’t know what else to say for prevention…good luck
1 I would love to know how you got her to not to scratch. I cannot.
2 What is your cream called? I have trued every thing to get read of my Daughters Eczema.
3 I put Socks on her hands at night to stop her from scratching.
My Doc-tore told me that it is so bad in Winter 1 because she is not in the pole with the color en 2 the air is so dry 3 the sweat gatherer in the elbows and knees.
I suffer from Winter Eczema. Most years it get quite bad on my arms and legs with itchy scaly, bleeding patches. I tried every lotion on the market. Nothing helped.
Last winter I finally found FULL relief! I stumbled upon a new all natual, soy based soap. Within one week the eczema was completely GONE! This soap also leaves you sqeekyclean and soft at the same time with no leftover product feel on you skin.
